Project Description

Europa Film Festivals (EFF) is a network of European Film Festivals which seeks to stimulate and encourage the development of film festivals in Europe. The EFF network originated from a Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture project, and provides a formalised system for sharing information, strategies and culture amongst festivals, representing a strong voice in Europe.

The EFF network’s primary purpose is to shape, develop, reach and agree common positions and perspectives on key issues. The network aims to develop resources, business models, best practices and information exchange infrastructures to support its members, providing a unique opportunity to strengthen film festivals.

Europa Film Festivals members include:

Alexis Juncosa (Chairperson) – Luxembourg City Film Festival, Luxembourg
Miriam Allen – Galway Film Fleadh, Ireland
Alejandro Díaz Castaño – Gijon International Film Festival, Spain
Jacqueline Schrijver – Noordelijk Film Festival, The Netherlands
Kathrin Kohlstedde – Filmfest Hamburg, Germany
Andy Dimopoulou – Athens International Film Festival, Greece
Anais Emery – Geneva International Film Festival, Switzerland

Project Outcomes – what we expect from this project

Peripheral Visions is a Europa Film Festivals co-curated competition. This European cinema competition for first and second feature film makers features a €5,000 prize. Each EFF network member selects a first or second feature from their country and the films are judged by an independent jury.

The 2023 Peripheral Visions Award with Galway Culture Company went to THE LAND WITHIN.

In 2024, the films featured were from Slovakia, Spain, Ukraine, Ireland, Czechia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany, France, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Hungary, Romania. Sweden, Italy and Finland.

The 2024 Peripheral Visions Award with Galway Culture Company went to POISON.

The programme of work developed and delivered by the Galway Film Fleadh as a significant legacy outcome further supports Galway’s designation as a UNESCO City of Film. The programme increases European connections and networks facilitated during the ECoC designation.
