Strategic Aim

This project falls under our third strategic aim;

Provide Supports to the Cultural and Creative Sector

Project Description

FUEL is Druid’s 9-month residency for theatre-makers based in the west of Ireland. It provides participants with a stipend, mentoring, networking opportunities, and access to office and rehearsal spaces to develop their original work. The residency culminates in a live showcase where artists present excerpts from their plays.

The FUEL programme is a response to artists’ need for a greater commitment to the creative development process.

Galway Culture Company funds supported international development opportunities for artists participating in Druid’s FUEL residency programme.

Project Outcomes – what we expect from this project

To date, Galway Culture Company’s support has made it possible for three of the 2024 resident FUEL artists to seek out and participate in collaborative cultural immersion experiences with EU partners:

  • Raphael Adams: attending a short course at the École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Avignon, France. The bursary enabled Adams to deepen his skills in physical theatre and movement, which he is applying to his current project Gulliver in Love. The training will help him construct the movement sections that occur between dating phases when voiceovers are played.
  • Dylan McGloin: collaborating with the 1781 Collective in Berlin. This project will involve early-stage development of LABYRINTH #6: The Rites of Spring, a performance inspired by Stravinsky’s work. McGloin will join a week-long workshop where he can participate in the creative process and experiment with the interplay between music and physical performance work together, which underpins his practice.
  • Áine Ní Laoghaire: participating in the La Muse Artist Hosted Retreat. This retreat will provide her with time to reflect on and shape the work created so far for her project My Boyfriend Plays Pretend, while connecting with other international artists from various disciplines.
  • Emily White is currently seeking out opportunities relevant to her artistic practice.

Artists will provide feedback reports on their experiences and learnings at a future date.

The FUEL industry showcase was presented at The Mick Lally Theatre in June 2024 to a full house of theatre peers and colleagues, and artist friends and families. The performances were well received with a lively post show discussion.
