Project Description

Cultural Milestones is a new podcast celebrating important cultural milestones in Galway city and county, focusing on first-hand accounts of, and the reaction to, pivotal cultural changes in the region.

The first series features episodes that discuss the arrival of the first televisions, the important role of newspapers in spreading cultural news, the exciting emergence of cinema and film plus the role of the poitín still culture in Connemara. It also asks ‘What was in the water?’ at UCG back in the 70’s and 80’s to simultaneously create successful arts organisations such as Druid Theatre Company, Galway International Arts Festival, Galway Film Fleadh and Macnas.

5 episodes in both English and Irish were released every other week from January through March, 2024.The episodes were:

Episode 1

Spreading the News

The role of local newspapers in the dissemination of culture is explored as Sally-Ann Barrett speaks to Judy Murphy, Arts Editor of the Connacht Tribune group, David Burke, MD of the Tuam Herald and Former Arts Officer for Galway James Harrold.

Television Arrives in Galway

Stories recounting the arrival of television sets in homes across Galway are remembered as Sally-Ann Barrett speaks to Hugh Ferguson, Tracey Ferguson and Gerry Costello on their memories of the changes the goggle box ushered in.

Something in the Water (UCG)

University of Galway (UCG) was the meeting point for a number of graduates who became cultural leaders in their disciplines. Sally-Ann Barrett speaks to Ollie Jennings, Fergal McGrath and Marilyn Gaughan Reddan about the journey from the UCG Arts Society to the first Festival Big Top and beyond.

How this project is funded

The Galway Culture Company, which is supported by the Government of Ireland under the National Development Plan through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
