Galway schools invited to apply for Architecture at the Edge Design Lab programme 2024

Design Lab’s unique hands-on architecture education program invites young people to help shape their built environment.

The team at Architecture at the Edge has announced the return of Design Lab, their workshop-based schools’ program that invites young people to be part of a creative design process that results in a real design for a space or place to build.

The programme, now in its fourth year, is open to all Galway schools with a focus on students who are interested in, or show an aptitude for, design, construction, and technical subjects. Over the course of the program, students will not only learn about, but take part in and manage the design and build process from start to finish. With the guidance of our Design Lab Ambassadors, selected via an open call funded in partnership with the Galway Culture Company, students will channel their ideas and inspiration into creating a real, tangible, design for a large-scale build.

The program consists of a series of workshops held with each school in the lead up to the co-design and construction of a full-scale installation in a shared space which will then be open for exhibition to the public.

This year we’re shaking things up by cultivating creative vision, exploring what it means to make change, championing young people and their ideas and help them realise the potential of a better designed built environment. We aim to instil a confident and curiosity in those who take part, sharing the know-how to shape and influence the spaces in which we live.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from schools to join us for Design Lab programme 2024. If you work with a school or students based in Galway City and/or County and are looking for exciting ways to expand your curriculum or practice, we would love to hear from you!
